I was catching up on the international news last weekend for Model UN, especially on the Nuclear Summit in The Hague when this picture caught my attention:

Apparently all the government leaders had a dinner hosted by the Dutch King and Queen. But that was not what first caught my eye. All the paintings, even on the ceilings. It seems they are some kind of memorial to a very early Dutch politician if I read it correctly and the hall is very rarely opened.

And not only the paintings are stunning. What we can see from the event itself as well. The uniforms of the staff, the French style of table setting and the seating plan of the guests...

I wish I could organize such an event someday though. I was taught hostessing, but this is something totally different. A dinner party for a small group I can easily handle, but this is on such a large scale.

Something like this is just a matter of practice, you start with your small dinner parties, go onto social galas and then huge diplomatic affairs. Although you should see the organization behind one of my Gran's parties, it take a team of about 20 people a month to get ready for one, and she hosts them all year round. It's crazy.

It's a good way to gain experience indeed. Too bad opportunities are so rare, but perhaps I should look for a few possibilities.

Does your grandmother have a dedicated staff for this or do they also have different responsibilities?

Well a little bit of both. She uses some of the household staff to help with the parties, and has some employees who's entire job is preparing for the parties.

I don't get it. I mean, I do - but why would you want to have a party, or attend one, when everything's going to be so strict and formal and photographers are going to be everywhere and cameras and things?

I have to agree with you on the dozen of photographers, but I do feel a formal party like that has it's own charm. It is just very different from what we are normally used to.

These types of affairs are more about those who view the photos — it is important for those attending to know that they will be noticed there as a sign of prestige and respect. These events are a celebration of prestige, position, and tradition.

Why wish it when you can do it? What is holding you back?

There are just not many events I could step into to organize. Especially on a larger scale. Though that could come later.

Well if you want practice I am sure I could use your help. I am almost feeling better so we can talk about it if you like.

Galas such as these are more of a lesson in choreography or theatrical production. Everyone participating knows their role, lines, and what is expected. The Royal Organiser is the director here.

For that sort of position, you'll need exemplary communication skills, an iron will, and the ability to change plans on a whim on top of the usual decorum expected of those who associate with higher stations.

*nods* That does make quite a bit of sense and sounds quite similar to what Sue described.

Though I do think I would add nerves of steel and excellent stress managing skills to that list as I imagine the responsibilities that come with it.

You will be required to be on-call at all times.

You must also develop the charisma needed to instill fear in an army of underlings.
